October 04, 2017: Coming under pressure from Opposition and sensing dissent among the common people, Police ultimately swung into action and arrested today one person in connection with disappearance of a driver – Jiban Debnath.
After Police picked up Barendra Debbarma – reportedly a hardcore IPFT supporter – in connection with the case, large number of local tribal people, including women gheraoed the Radhapur Police Station. Agitation tribal people were demanding immediate release of the accused.
Instead of a mute spectator, this time Police acted tough and conveyed a strong message to trouble makers. On earlier occasions, Police were in the receiving ends, however, today Police appeared in a different role and started with a mild lathi charge. Sensing that the situation may spill out of control, Police resorted to firing tear gas shells to disperse the agitating mob. Considering the gravity of the situation, the West district administration did not waste time in imposing a prohibitory order- section 144 of Cr.P.C at Radhapur area. Besides, a large number of police, TSR and CRPF personnel were deployed to avoid any untoward incident.

As part of the precautionary measures, the administration also suspended mobile internet and SMS services for 24 hours.
A duty officer from Radhapur police station said the detainee is undergoing interrogation. “The situation is tense but well under control,” said the officer.
However, there were gatherings of alleged IPFT supporters in different pockets of Radhapur till the last information came in. Unconfirmed sources said three persons were injured during the lathi-charge today.
