June 15, 2017: The Supreme Court today issued notice to the Centre on pleas challenging notification banning the sale and purchase of cattle at animal markets for slaughter.
The court asked the Centre to file its response within two weeks and posted the matter for hearing on 11th of next month.
The vacation bench comprising Justices R K Agrawal and S K Kaul was hearing two separate petitions challenging the notification.
Additional Solicitor General P S Narasimha, appearing for the Centre, told the bench that intention behind bringing the notification was to have a regulatory regime on cattle trade across the country.
One of the petitioners has claimed in his plea that the provisions in the notification were unconstitutional.
The petitioner said the provisions violated the fundamental rights including freedom of conscience and religion and right to livelihood.
Last month, the government had banned the sale of cattle for slaughter and restricted cattle trade to farm owners.
