1-day Monsoon session of Tripura Assembly on Sept 21, omitting Question hr irks CPIM

The Monsoon session of the Tripura Legislative Assembly will be held for one day on September 21 next . The session will be short one in view of Covid19 outbreak. According to sources, there will be no ‘Question hour’ and nine bills are scheduled to be placed during the session. Both of this two decisions triggered resentment among the CPIM MLAs.

Protesting against these decisions taken at the Business Advisory Committee (BAC) meeting which was held on Friday to finalize business of the monsoon session CPIM MLAs walked out of the meeting.

Speaker Rebati Mohan Das, Deputy Speaker Bishwabandhu Sen, Deputy Chief Minister Jishnu Dev Varma, Chief Whip Kalyani Roy, Parliamentary Affairs Minister Ratan Lal Nath, MLA Sudip Roy Barman, CPIM MLAs Tapan Chakraborty and Sudhan Das were present in the meeting.

“CPIM chief Whip Tapan Chakraborty and MLA Sudhan Das walked out of the BAC meeting as it was decided in the meeting there would be no ‘Question Hour’ in the upcoming session”, sources said.

Both the CPIM MLAs protested against the suspension of Question and demanded inclusion of Question Hour in the session.  However, the demand was ruled out.

The situation turned worse as proposals were placed at the BAC meeting relating to passing several bills without discussions. “Even the Union Government allowed discussions before passing Farm bills in the Parliament. How can we let bills become laws without studying the Bills and discussing those in detail? This is an unprecedented decision”, Chakraborty and Das said.

However, the Treasury bench members remained defiant and turned down proposals to include Question Hour or hold a discussion on bills. At this juncture, both Chakraborty and Das walked out of the meeting to register their protests.

Speaker Rebati Mohan Das and Parliamentary Affairs Minister Ratan Lal Nath, however, expressed surprise and shock at the move by the Opposition MLAs.
