Baby needs surgeries to correct birth defects, poor parents seek financial help

Poverty-stricken parents of a 10-month old baby who is suffering from webbed fingers and toe – a congenital defect, are seeking financial assistance to conduct surgeries on the baby.

 

The baby of a daily wage earner, Sanga Darlong is living with ‘webbed’ fingers and toes at Tailenbari Under Unakoti District in Tripura, According to doctors, surgeries could free the fussed together fingers and provide the baby a normal life.

 

 The baby is suffering from a congenital anomaly, medically known as ‘Syndactyly’ in which two or more fingers and/or toes are webbed or fussed together.

.

After the birth of the baby, Sanga Darlong and his wife noticed the deformity of the newborn baby and consulted doctors of Unakoti District Hospital. Doctors told the parents that surgeries could cure the baby. However, surviving on a meager income, Darlong family is unable to afford to conduct surgery.

 

Sanga Darlong along with his wife lives in Tailenbari under Unakoti ADC Village. They also have a 3.6-year old daughter. The 4-member Darlong family is surviving on the income of Sanga who is a daily wage earner.  

 

“It is difficult for us to arrange a square meal for us daily. How can we think about surgery?”, helpless mother of the baby said.

 

She also alleged that they had not received any Government assistance under any of the livelihood schemes. “Deprived of Government help, we are unable to start piggery or poultry for livelihood option. Without any sustainable income, at present status, it is impossible for us to bear the cost of surgery”, the wife told media.

 

Appealing help from kind-hearted persons, the wife also said, “Political leaders come in our village during elections and give us assurance. However, after the poll is over, leaders forget our plights”.

 

In Tailenbari hamlets, 80 percent of inhabitants belong to Darlong community while the rests belong to Reang community. More than 50 percent of the inhabitants are solely dependent on daily wage earnings. Almost all the families are living in poverty., local sources added.
