Christians resent ADC Poll on Easter Sunday

The Christian community of the State expressed disappointment relating to the date of Tripura Tribal Area Autonomous District Council (TTAADC) election as it falls on Easter Sunday.

In a press statement, the Spokesperson of the Diocese of Agartala said, “Representatives of the Christian community met on Wednesday and expressed their disappointment and shock at the date of the General Elections to TTAADC, announced on March 2”.

A letter to the State Election Commissioner was in this regard sent by Bishop of Agartala Diocese Fr Lumen Monterio.

The statement further read, “the scheduled date of elections, April 4, 2021, falls in Easter Sunday which is the culmination of the weeklong obligatory observance of faith for all Christians around the world. Elections held on Easter Sunday, would certainly hamper their wholehearted participation in the electoral process”.

The Spokesperson also said, “in a petition submitted to the State Election Commissioner, the community has appealed for rescheduling the date of polling in order to enable the people to exercise their franchise and to enable them to fulfill their faith obligations”.

Easter Sunday is the Day of Resurrection of Lord Jesus after his Crucifixion at Golgotha on Good Friday.

Meanwhile, Leader of the Mizo Convention of Tripura, Dr Zairemthiama Pachua also reacted to the issue on Tuesday. He said, “TTAADC Election date has been announced. It falls on Good Friday & Easter weekend. Now, I am contemplating whether I will go to the polling station to cast my vote or keep my religious obligation! People in Jampui Hills are talking about boycotting the election !”
