Cong-BJP supporters clash in Agartala, several including Birajit Sinha hurt

Incidents of violence and vandalism were reported from different areas in Tripura including Agartala after the announcement of by-poll results on Sunday.


Tripura-by-polls-Congress-BJP-clashChaos prevailed at Post Office Choumuhani in Agartala after a group of Congress and BJP supported clashed and started brick batting. Tripura Pradesh Congress president Birajit Sinha sustained injuries in stone pelting and was hospitalized.


During the incident, motorbikes were vandalized and damaged near Congress Bhavan at the Post Office Choumuhani in Agartala.


However, security personnel in adequate numbers were deployed and tear gas shells were fired to bring the situation under control.


An attack on one BJP councillor near her home allegedly by some Congress supporters triggered the clash. After the victory of Congress candidate Sudip Roy Barman won from 6-Agartala seat, a group of Congress men attacked the councillor – she managed to escape but one of the BJP supporters was injured and had to be hospitalized.


Soon BJP activists assembled at the Choumuhani and started vandalizing bikes etc and attacking Congress supporters and leaders.  


Later, Congress leaders- Sudip Roy Barman and Ashis Saha along with others met the SP West at West Agartala police station.


Speaking to the media, Roy Barman said the brawl started after a Congress supporter of Agartala constituency was stabbed near IGM hospital.


Congress leaders alleged, a group of BJP supporters came on bike and launched an attack on Congress Bhavan and Birajit Sinha was injured in the attack. According to the Congress leader, the entire incident took place in presence of the Police personnel.


Meantime, a delegation of BJP also talked to police regarding the Post Office Chowmuhani incident.


ICA Minister Sushanta Chowdhury, while speaking to the media said that a BJP councillor was first attacked by the Congress workers.


He said, the BJP delegation met SP West and held discussions so that the law and order doesn't deteriorate. He said, a demand was also placed before police for arresting the culprits involved in the incident.


According to reports coming in from Khowai, miscreants set the local Congress party office on fire. Besides, MLA Brishaketu Debbarma and MDC Bidyut Debbarma were attacked and their vehicles were vandalized.


Later, Tipra Motha supporters staged road blockades on Agartala - Kamalpur road and Agartala – Mohanpur - Khowai road at various locations in protest against the attacks on the party leaders. The vehicular movement was disrupted following the protests. Till the last information came in, some common people and a few other vehicles also came under attack of Tipra Motha workers during the agitation.


Besides, vandalism in Congress Party offices at Belonia and Kalyanpur were also reported.
