DYFI rally attacked, Tripura MP Jharna of CPIM escapes narrowly

Political mercury in Agartala soared after yet another attack on a pre-scheduled rally of Democratic Youth Federation of India (DYFI), youth wing of CPI-M left more than four people injured at Dukli area near Agartala on Sunday. Sources said, during the attack the Rajya Sabha MP Jharna Das Biadya’s house was ransacked, her personal guard and a local veteran CPIM leader Narayan Deb sustained injuries.   

 

Speaking on the issue the MP said, the local DYFI division has a pre-scheduled rally at Dukli and when the DYFI activists gradually started to gather in the decided site, some miscreants suddenly attacked them. Some of them had been identified as leaders of BJP’s Yuva Morcha, she alleged. 

 

“They had first targeted the places from where the DYFI workers were coming. A group of 35 to 40 people reached Dulki and started attacking the CPIM workers randomly. During these attacks, local committee member Manornjan Roy and local committee secretary Narayan Deb sustained injuries”, she said. 

 

Later, the miscreants intensified the degree of attack and started chasing the CPIM workers, and during this time, the residence of MP Jharna Das Baidya was also ransacked. Some parts of her property were also damaged and stones and brick pieces were pelted, Das added. 

 

Tripura State unit of CPIM condemned the attack and said that the miscreants had also tried to assault the MP but it was a narrow escape for her. A number of workers were hospitalized following the attacks and the party felt that these attacks were akin to the “Fascist” assault on democracy. 

 

According to the party’s statement, former MLA Raj Kumar Chowdhury was also injured during the incident and the miscreants locked up the party office and vandalized some cars parked in front of Dukli party office.
