Imposition of night curfew could cause rush during curfew-free time: Experts

Even as Coronavirus threat is looming large, Tripura Government’s decision not to impose night curfew during Puja raised many an eye brow. Instead of imposing night curfew, Government preferred to rely on relentless campaign to ensure strict adherence to Covid19 appropriate behavior. Doctors’ body also joined in the campaign and repeatedly urged people to keep in mind serious spike in Covid19 in Kerala after Onam festival there.

Experts close highly placed sources said on condition of anonymity, “The logic behind non-imposition of night curfew is simple – this decision was taken to avoid larger crowds during curfew-free time.” Administration in co-operation with Puja organizers are focusing on strict adherence to Covid19 guidelines.

Government’s decision on night curfew received supports from several big budget Puja organizers. “It is a good move that the Government has not imposed night curfew, otherwise, there could be a mad rush and large gatherings in front of pandals could not be prevented”, said one member of Lal Bahadur club. Several other big banner Puja committees also hailed the decision and commented that imposition Night Curfew would actually increase possibility of Covid19 transmission.

At several Puja pandals, organizers have set up ‘thermal scanners’ for revelers as well as arranged masks and sanitizers. Through Public Address (PA) system, organizers are urging people to maintain social distance to keep Corona at bay.

According to available information, a total of One thousand 968 puja have been held across the State this year, out of which 776 puja are in West Tripura district.

Even as light shower dampened Puja spirit on last two days – Sashthi and Saptami, the weather on Ashtami was relatively better as there was no rain during the day and evening time – much to the delight of revelers.

However, significantly fewer crowds were noticed this year compared to last year. While Corona scare is cited as one the reasons, drizzles and overcast sky prevented many to stay back at home.

While fewer than normal crowds were seen at Puja pandals and roads, restaurants and food stalls in Agartala did a brisk business in the evening.
