Lorry driver killing in Tripura: Truck Drivers Sangh blocks NH

Members of Tripura Truck Drivers’ Sangh staged a road blockade agitation at Netajinagar Bridge area under Teliamura in Tripura along the National Highway on Sunday morning. The agitators were demanding a compensation of Rs 5 lakh and a government job for one of the relatives of the lorry driver, Pradip Debnath who was brutally lynched on February 26 night by some miscreants.

The blockade brought the traffic along the NH to a grinding halt and caused inconvenience to passengers.

Tripura-lorry-driver-killingNotably, Pradip Debnath was driving a goods-laden Agartala-bound lorry on February 26 night and a gang riding a Bolero car stopped the lorry. The gang dragged the driver Pradip Debnath out of the lorry and started thrashing him. The incident took place in an area under Ambassa in Dhalai district. The gang thrashed him fatally and fled away with Rs 40000 cash. Even as Police are investigating the case, no one was arrested till the report filing.

Inspector-General of Police (Law and Order) Arindam Nath told IANS, “We have got some clues of the incident. One person was detained. Police are investigating the case. As the investigations are at an early stage, we are unable to disclose the details behind the crime."

Irked at the brutal killing, Tripur Truck Drivers’ Sangha which is affiliated to BMS, staged the road blockade today. Officials of civil and Police administration rushed to the spot. After hectic discussions, agitators handed over a memorandum to Teliamura SDM Bhaskar Bhattacharjee and withdrew the agitation. In the memorandum, agitating truck drivers demanded, Government job for one of the family members of the deceased, a compensation of Rs 5 lakh to family members and renovation works of the Bridge at Ambassa along the National highway. Notably, as the Bridge at Ambassa is in deplorable condition, the lorry driver took a detour to avoid the bridge and fell victim to his killers.
