Tripura bounces back from negative growth rate, records rise in GSDP, Per capita Income

Tripura has recorded significant improvements in Gross State Domestic Product (GSDP) and Per Capita Income in current prices in the 2021-22 FY compared to 2018-19. However, growth rate of the State’s economy showed a decline for the same period, officials of the Directorate of Economics and Statistics Planning department said.

 

Addressing a press conference in Agartala on Wednesday (Nov 30), secretary of the Directorate of Economics and Statistics Planning department, Juber Ali Hasmi in presence of Joint Director Chiranjib Ghosh and additional Director AA Chanda presented data on the GSDP, Per capita income, State economy’s growth rate vis-à-vis corresponding All India data and performance of the department today.

 

As per the information revealed by the officials 2011-12 was considered as the base year and GSDP at current prices in 2018-19 was Rs 49823.32 crore. As per the advance estimates, the GSDP increased to Rs 64778.08 crore in 2021-22 FY.

 

Per Capita Income was Rs 113016 vis-a-vis All India Per Capita Income at Rs 125946 during 2018-19. The Per Capita Income reached Rs 140803 as per the Advanced estimates in 2021-22 FY while the All India Per Capita Income increased to Rs 150007 during the same FY.

 

However, Year-on-Year (Y-o-Y) growth rate of the State economy in constant prices declined as per the advanced estimates in 2021-22 FY compared to 2018-19.

 

The Y-o-Y growth in 2018-19 was 11.06 – the highest ever since 2012-13. The growth rate showed sharp fall during Covid hit 2019-20 and 2020-21 FYs. According to the first revised estimates, the growth rate went negative (-2.15) for the first time since 2012-13. Despite the steep decline, the economy recovered and registered an 8.69 growth rate (advance estimate) in 2021-22 FY.  

 

The All India growth rate in 2018-19 was 6.45 and it became 8.68 in 2021-22.

 

One of the interesting information that came out was Tripura recorded higher growth rates than All India rate since 2012-13 except 2019-20. As per the second revised estimates All India Growth rate was 3.74 while that of Tripura was 3.56.

 

Performance of Tripura in terms of ‘SDG India Index’ of Niti Aayog also showed a steady improvement. The composite of Tripura was 55 vis-à-vis India’s 57 in 2018. However, the composite score improved in 2020-21 to 65 (Tripura) and 66 (All India).

 

 The "North Eastern Region-District SDG Index & Dashboard (Baseline Report 2021-72)" published by Niti Aayog & Govt of India for the 120 districts of the region. According to the report, Gomati and North Tripura are in the 2nd spots, while West Tripura in 4th, Unakoti in 7th, Dhalai & Sepahijala in 9th South Tripura in 11 and Khowai is in 15th positions.
