Ghastly death of a girl in Tripura: Opposition parties held protest rallies, slammed Govt. Cong leader, cameraman heckled at victim’s residence by locals

Enewstime Desk

Agartala, March 14, 2020: The ghastly death of a 22-year old girl at Mohanpur, near Agartala in West Tripura  – that many found similarity with Tapashi Malik in West Bengal and Priyanka Reddy in Hyderabad – triggered large scale condemnation in Tripura. Several frontal organizations of Opposition parties – both CPI-M and Congress held separate rallies demanding exemplary punishment for the culprits. Mahila Morcha of ruling BJP visited the victim’s house yesterday and demanded stern action against the culprits. Police arrested one in connection with alleged burnt alive case.

Besides, Congress leader Subal Bhowmik faced stiff challenges from local youths as he went to meet the victims family – at that time one photo journalists also assaulted.

Ghastly Death: Protest rallies

Picking up the highly sensational brutal rape and death of a young girl in Mohanpur, both CPM and Congress today staged separate protests asking the government to ensure safety of women.

Hundreds of Pradesh Youth Congress activists held a protest in the capital against the incident of the 22 year old girl in Rangacherra this evening. The members of Pradesh Youth Congress expressed their deep condolences and demanded the state government to enact a strong law against the crime.

Senior Congress leaders- PK Biswas, Gopal Chandra Roy and others also joined the protest. Pradesh Youth Congress chief Pujan Biswas said, it is a heinous crime and state government should take stern action against the rapists and the killers. Criticizing the state government, he also demanded the BJP government to take appropriate measures to protect women.

The All India Democratic Women Association (AIDWA), the women wing of the opposition CPI-M  also held a similar protest in the city. Senior women leaders of the party joined the protest.

Speaking on the occasion AIDWA leader Rama Das said, “We want exemplary punishment of the culprits. The government must ensure security of the women”.

Slamming the BJP, she alleged that a team of lawyers from the save constitution forum visited the family to offer legal assistance but BJP sheltered miscreants heckled them and restrained them from meeting the family.

Cong leader heckled, photo journalist assaulted

A team of Congress led by Subal Bhowmik was physically heckled in Mohanpur – at the residence of victim by some locals. A photo journalist Jakir Hussain was also assaulted by the locals- which not only complicated the situation but also sparked off yet another round condemnation.

Subal Bhowmik who went to talk to victim’s family at Rangacherra with Prakash Das, Mahila Congress general secretary Ratna Datta and others were reportedly physically heckled at the residence of victim by some locals. Later Bhowmik came down heavily in a press conference accusing law minister Ratan Lal Nath- who is elected from Mohanpur- for instigating the assault. Bhowmik threatened intensified protests across the state over the incident.

One journalist with local TV channel Jakir Hossain was also, reportedly, attacked today at Mohanpur who along with other photographers went to victim’s house to cover the visit of Congress leader Subal Bhowmik.

Speaking to this reporter, Jakir said, “I stopped videoing as soon as they asked us to stop . But, when I started surfing internet they thought I was video recording the visit. They started beating me up and I was later rescued by my colleagues and other local people”.
