We almost all have experienced the best part of “serving the humanity” during this COVID19 situation as people from various walks of life continued to help those in need– individually, institutionally or otherwise. Among such countless people, there is someone who stands different for her ‘dedication and swift decision’. It’s an inspiring story of a young Community Health Officer (CHO) of Tripura, who took timely decision and discharged her duty with dedication to save two lives– helping a pregnant woman safely deliver her baby– in a difficult situation.
On that day, the CHO- Puja Malakar, who is working under National Health Mission and posted at Kachucherra Health and Wellness Centre (HWC) in Dhalai district, was on another duty in the fight against COVID19 and about to leave along with her team to visit the people who were in home quarantine.
When the CHO picked up the call, the caller elaborated pain of an expecting mother– Sushmita Das who was suffering from labour pain.
Being the lockdown in force, public transport service was not available which actually turned the situation more challenging. On the other hand the ambulance of this centre was carrying another patient to district hospital at the same time.
The CHO then also tried calling 102 but there was no response.
Now, the CHO kept on thinking for an alternative since she was willing to help the pregnant lady. At the same time, she had other assignments to visit the people in quarantine.
But, braving all the challenges, the CHO, as she said, then decided to reach the lady and left for her residence for a safe delivery.
Finally, Rajib Acharjee, a multipurpose worker in her team, drove her on his two wheeler. The CHO took all the essentials required for delivery with her. It all happened within a very short period as she took the decision without wasting a single moment.
Meanwhile, on her way to the lady’s house, the CHO was constantly in touch with the ASHA worker and passed all necessary instructions.
At last, she reached the destination and tested success by conducting a safe delivery while maintaining all the safety and hygienic measures. Both the mother and her baby are doing well.
Exclusively speaking to this journalist, the CHO said she feels that the humble effort in the part of a healthcare professional can bring smile to others– no matter how difficult the situation is.
“Being a health professional, my first and foremost duty is to provide healthcare to others even in any challenging situation and on that day, I discharged my duty only,” the CHO said while expressing her happiness over the successful delivery.
Amid this COVID19 pandemic, the entire globe is appreciating the efforts of frontline warriors including health staff. At such situation, the dedication and spirit of Puja has entered the limelight now and set an example, indeed.
