Synopsis by enewstime desk: Tripura Chief Minister Dr. Manik Saha announced a major healthcare boost, including the establishment of a 100-bed tertiary eye hospital and expansion of treatment facilities for kidney, liver, and bone marrow transplants. A ₹250 crore Super Speciality block has been set up at GB Pant Hospital, and insurance coverage under TCMJAY has been extended to all families without income barriers. Additionally, the state is setting up de-addiction centres across all districts, backed by central funding, as part of its zero-tolerance policy against drug abuse.

Agartala (Tripura), July 2, 2025: Tripura Chief Minister Dr. Manik Saha announced the establishment of a 100-bed tertiary eye hospital in Tripura as part of the government’s ambitious plan to transform the state into a comprehensive medical hub. The move aims to enhance in-state healthcare facilities and reduce the need for patients to travel outside for advanced treatment.

Speaking at the Doctors’ Day celebration in Agartala on Tuesday (July 1), the Chief Minister said apart from enhancing healthcare delivery, the State government is strengthening infrastructure to combat drug-abuse.

The State Government has planned setting up de-addiction centre at Bishramganj with the financial aid from the DoNER and rehabilitation centres in each of the eight districts in the State, Dr Saha pointed out.

In his Doctors’ Day speech, Chief Minister Saha said the government is focused on developing medical infrastructure to ensure treatment for all kinds of diseases is available within the state.

Highlighting recent developments, he said that a Super Speciality block has already been constructed at the state-run Govind Ballabh Pant Medical College and Hospital at a cost of ₹250 crore to bolster healthcare services.

“Tripura now has three medical colleges, including one in the private sector, offering a total of 400 seats. Additionally, we have a 63-bed dental college and several nursing institutions,” said Saha, who is a dental surgeon himself.

He added that all district hospitals would be upgraded with better infrastructure and increased manpower to strengthen grassroots-level healthcare.

Dr. Saha, who also holds the Health and Family Welfare portfolio, informed that the state government had earlier rolled out the Tripura Chief Minister Jan Arogya Yojana (TCMJAY), which offers annual health insurance coverage of ₹5 lakh per family without any income ceiling. The scheme is modeled on the Pradhan Mantri Jan Arogya Yojana (PM-JAY), he added.

The Chief Minister also noted that kidney transplants have already commenced in the state. Talks are underway with top medical institutions across the country to begin liver and bone marrow transplants in Tripura.
