Campaigning is picking up momentum in Assam with leaders of various parties, including Congress and Assam Gana Parishad, holding rallies and public meetings to woo voters ahead of the upcoming assembly polls. Addressing an election rally at Titabar in Jorhat district, Assam Chief Minister and Congress leader Tarun Gogoi took on the Prime Minister Narendra Modi, accusing NDA government of being anti-poor. Mr Gogoi said BJP will face the same fate in Assam assembly polls which it faced in Bihar.
He asked where Mr Modi was when Assam was in the grip of floods. Saying that Congress government in Assam has always stood for the poor, he said his focus is on rural development, providing electricity, drinking water and education. The Chief Minister said his government has provided cycles to women and laptops to students and asked if there were such schemes in Gujarat. AIR correspondent reports that the first phase of polling will be held on 4th of April in 65 assembly seats.
