September 07, 2017: Student politics in Tripura has turned violent this year as clashes between Leftist Student wing and BJP supported Students’ body have become a common matter. Almost everyday, in some college, SFI and ABVP activists get involve in pitched battle and vandalism. With Students’ Council election scheduled to be held in colleges across the State on September 12, Police administration is expecting and worried about more such clashes in coming days.
After violence in BBM College in Aragatala on Wednesday, unrest prevailed at Ramthakur College, also in Agartala, following sporadic clashes between activists of SFI and Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP). Trouble started when scrutiny of the nomination papers filed by the candidates of student’s wings was going on at Ramthakur College.
According to SDPO Amtali Sudip Paul, a large number of outsiders assembled in front of the college gates but none of them could enter into the college campus as police prevented anyone except student to enter into college campus.
He, however, said the police and TSR personnel had to face tough situation to tackle the SFI and ABVP activists during the clashes. “The situation was tense but well under control,” said the SDPO.
At the end of the scrutiny of nomination papers, brawls between SFI and ABVP activists once again started outside the campus on the main road. But, timely intervention by Police and TSR personnel averted major untoward incidences.
