Agartala, August 13: Tripura is placing tourism at the centre of its development strategy for Unakoti, with the state government seeking to convert the district’s rich heritage and natural attractions into new employment and economic opportunities.
Chief Minister Prof. Dr. Manik Saha said tourism development can strengthen the local economy while creating jobs for people living in and around Unakoti.
His remarks came during a programme at Dolugaon Higher Secondary School, where he inaugurated six projects and laid the foundation stones for 12 others. The 18 projects carry a combined cost of Rs 45 crore 18 lakh 61 thousand.
The wider development push comes as the state looks to improve infrastructure across Unakoti and make its tourism assets more accessible and attractive.
Heritage of Unakoti as an Economic Opportunity
Unakoti is best known for its ancient rock-cut sculptures and religious heritage. The district administration describes the heritage site as a Shaivite pilgrimage destination dating back to the seventh to ninth centuries, if not earlier.
The state government now wants to build a stronger economic ecosystem around that heritage.
Dr. Saha praised the ‘Clean and Green Unakoti’ initiative. He said tourism infrastructure is being developed while keeping the district’s historical, archaeological and religious character in mind.
The focus goes beyond attracting more visitors. The government sees higher tourist footfall as a potential source of income for local communities.
Tourism can create demand for accommodation, food services, transport, guides, handicrafts and other visitor-related services. It can also open opportunities for small businesses and young entrepreneurs.

Dr. Saha also highlighted the proposal to convert Pushpawant Palace into a five-star hotel.
