Indian-origin cancer researcher knighted by Queen Elizabeth:
An Indian-origin cancer research expert has received Knighthood from Britain’s Queen Elizabeth II for his influential work on prevention and treatment of cancer. Harpal Singh Kumar’s name appeared in the annual New Year’s Honours list published in London. He is the chief executive of Cancer Research UK. Mr Kumar is hugely influential in promoting research into the prevention, early diagnosis and treatment of cancer.
England, Scotland and Northern Ireland battered by Storm Frank:
Parts of England, Scotland and Northern Ireland have been battered by Storm Frank with severe floods expected. Scotland bore the brunt of bad weather with hundreds of homes evacuated in the Border towns of Dumfries, Hawick and Peebles. Hundreds of homes are without power in Yorkshire.
Two severe flood warnings are in place in Scotland and dozens in UK. In Dumfries and Galloway, the River Nith has burst its banks causing flooding in the town of Dumfries. A severe flood warning, indicating danger to life, has been issued for the Whitesands area. The River Tweed in Peebles also has a severe flood warning in place and more than 300 homes have been evacuated in Hawick.
