Agartala, July 23, 2019: Police in North Tripura tasted major success against illegal drug trades and seized large quantity of Yaba drugs and Brown sugar of worth more than Rs 2 crore today from two different areas. Police also arrested two persons including a woman for possessing Yaba tablets and brown sugar, sources said this.

The ominous trade of banned medicine and drugs seemed to have shot up manifold since last few years. The increasing penetration of the crazy drugs, mainly, “Yaba” tablets have come to forefront many times. But, close on the heels of recent drug seizes, another drug haul has exposed a different picture of the trade.

Sources in the police department said, the drug peddlers are cleverly using railway routes for their trade. The smugglers board in  express trains such as Rajdhani, Tripureshwari etc where police get minimum chances to carry out elaborate search operations. Earlier, it was reported that the headquarters of the entire nexus was at Silchar but tight police vigil had forced smugglers to shift to lower parts of Barak Valley—Patharkandi and Hailakandi.

In a major success, police personnel today netted one Abbas Uddin from Nadiya Para and seized more than 40,000 Yaba tablets from his possession. The tablets were sold Rs 500 each in the open market. The cost of the entire consignment is nearly about Rs 2 crore.

Police sources said, we have secret information that the railway routes are being used incessantly for drug smuggling. As they get boarded in the express-trains, police did not get enough time to carry out search operations in the trains except at Dharmanagar, where the trains halt for some time. The smugglers get off the trains before Dharmanagar in order to evade police. But, this time we were alert and kept vigil on suspicious movements. We successfully nabbed the peddlers from Nadiya Para.

When asked of the mode of operation of the smugglers, the sources said, the entire network opted unique method of operation. The smugglers, in an attempt to erase the trail of money, switched to online transaction mode. In most of the cases, peddlers and dealers use Paytm for purchase and money transaction. Moreover, they also avoid face-to-face contact foe delivery. Instead, they ‘drop’ consignment at pre-decided spot and some one else pick up the consignment. With such mode of operation, Police get no idea about next end-user of business if someone get arrested. Leaving a small consignments open in crowded areas by someone where from it was forwarded for someone else is known as “dead drop” delivery.

However, the sources also said, Police are taking initiatives to unearth the network in no time and destroy it. Meanwhile, police had also arrested an middle aged woman identified as Kananrun Reang (50) from Kedhacherra and seized 152 grams of Brown Sugar worth Rs 15 to 20 lakh earlier this morning.
