Agartala, September 02, 2019: As the Prime Minister Narendra Modi urged the Nation to conserve water resources, the Tripura Government has taken decisive steps and planned construction of check dams in large number across the State. Both the Rural Development department and Forest Department will implement check dam construction works. Replying to a Calling Attention Notice placed by Chief Whip Kalyani Roy and MLA Ratan Chakraborty in the State Assembly on Tripura Government’s step relating to PM’s appeal for Water conservation, Chief Minister Biplab Kumar Deb said this in the Assembly today.
“Rural Development is constructing 350 new check dams. Moreover, 1447 check dams will be constructed under JICA (second phase) scheme of the Forest department”, the Chief Minister said and added, these check dams will provide the necessary water for supplying drinking water and irrigation.
Notably, Prime Minister Narendra Modi urged people to save every drop of water in the face of unpredictable monsoons and climate change-induced extreme weather. He emphasized ground water recharging, rain water harvesting and several other initiatives to ensure adequate water for drinking and irrigation purposes. After he made this appeal in his Mann Ki Baat, governments and several organizations have focused on this issue. Biplab Kumar Deb led, Tripura Government too has geared up to ensure conservation of water resources.
Apart from check dams, Biplab Kumar Deb referred to Ministry formed by the Prime Minister for water resource conservation and preservation and said, once this Ministry announces newly formulated schemes, State Government’s effort for water conservation will get a boost.
Deb also said, the State Government launched Atal Jal Dhara Mission to ensure potable water supply to every household across the State – expenditure is pegged at around Rs One thousand crore for implementation of the Mission.
