Agartala, February 11, 2020: Eyeing on opening new avenues for self reliance, Council of Ministers of Tripura Government approved a project – Kamdhenu. It aims at enhancing milk production in the State and at setting up dairy industries. The project expects to be a boost in making rural people self reliant.

Education Minister Ratan Lal Nath said this in a press conference at civil secretariat in Agartala today.

The Minister also said, under the Dairy Entrepreneurship Development project of central government, the banks provide subsidized loans to people for purchasing cows– 25 percent subsidy for general category and 33.3 percent subsidy for SC and ST.

“To encourage the people for milk production, the state government will bear the interest apart from the subsidy until their loans are cleared. The total expenditure of the state government will stand at Rs. 4 crore,” Nath told the media.

Giving details, the Education Minister also said that the beneficiaries of each family would get two cows so that they become self-sufficient.

He said, “Under this project Kamdhenu, an amount of Rs. 1.40 lakh to be spent for each of the beneficiary– the expenditure will be Rs. 1.60 lakh in case of cattle shed.”

“There are two systems for purchasing the cows to be brought from Haryana, Uttar Pradesh and Bihar– the beneficiaries will have choice to go to the spot and buy the cows. In other case, the Gomti Union will go to the spots and take necessary steps to purchase the cows after returning to the state,” Nath said in the press conference.

State Cabinet nod for Land Reforms Act amendment

In another decision, the cabinet today approved a proposal for amendment of Tripura Land Revenue and Land Reforms Act-1960.

“As per the decision, initiatives will be taken to boost tea tourism sector for strengthening economic condition. To attract more tourists, tourism infrastructures will be developed in the unused space (5 percent of the total area) of the tea gardens,” he added.

Giving other details, the minister said altogether 54 tea gardens are there across the state– three government run, 39 private and twelve cooperative-run tea gardens.

As many as 10,913 workers are there in such tea gardens where the total tea production was 87.30 lakh kg in 2017 and 92 lakh kg in 2019, Nath added.
