In a horrific road mishap, at least five college students were killed at Cachar in southern Assam on Wednesday.
According to sources, five students of Nabin Chandra College, Badarpur under Kalain in Assam were returning their homes in an Alto car from Badarpur to Gumra. The mishap occurred while a truck collided with the Alto head-on at Kalain in Cachar district. Three college students died on spot while another one collapsed after reaching Kalain PHC and the fifth student died on the way to Silchar Medical College.
The deceased have been identified as Arif Ahmed, a resident of Gumra, Manzur Ahmed of Kalain Dhumkar, Zafar Hussain Barabhuiyan of Jalalpur, Salman Alam Chowdhury of Gumra Paikan and Govinda Vaishnab of Gumra. A pall descended in Barak area after the news of death of five students spread.
Irked at the deaths of these five students, students of NC College blocked the Assam-Agartala National Highway at Badarpur. Protesters demanded punitive action against the killer truck driver and demanded full compensation for the victims’ family. Sources said, the situation is tensed and a large police force had been deployed at the spot.
