A life saving heart surgery on a 6-year-old child was successfully conducted by doctors free of cost at the Agartala Government Medical College (AGMC) and GBP Hospital in Agartala. Importantly, the patient is doing well.
Notably, the medical team of the AGMC and GBP Hospital succeeded in carrying out several critical heart surgeries in recent past.
The patient – Uday Rudra Paul from Lembucherra in Teliamura sub-division was admitted at the GBP hospital with complaint of fever and cough.
During medical examinations at Cardio Thoracic and Vascular Surgery and Interventional Radiology (CTVS-IR) department, the doctors revealed that the child was living with a heart disease.
It was found that that there was ‘single atrium with total septal defect’ in the heart of the patient. There were three chambers instead of normal four chambers in the heart – as a result, the child had been facing difficulties.
Finally, the medical team led by cardiac surgeon Dr. Kanak Narayan Bhattacharjee performed the critical heart surgery and created the fourth chamber in the heart of the patient. The surgery took almost six hours.
As the patient was covered under Ayusham Bharat facility, the surgery was performed at free of cost. According to a government press release, the child was doing well after the surgery.
The twelve-member medical team included cardiac anaesthesiologist Dr. Manimoy Debbarma, cardiac intensivist Dr. Surajit Paul, perfusionist Sujan Sahu and surgical assistant Sudipta Mandal.
Dr. Bhattacharjee was assisted by cardiologist Dr. Anindya Sundar Trivedi and Dr. Arup Deb in identifying heart disease of the child.
