BJP-Tripura-Assembly By-polls-candidatesThe Central Election Samiti of BJP has announced Prof (Dr.) Manik Saha – the incumbent Chief Minister – as the candidate for by-poll in 8-Bordowali Assembly Constituency. Dr Ashok Sinha has been named for 6-Agartala Assembly Constituency.

Besides, the Party has decided to field two women leaders- Swapna Das Paul and Malina Debnath – from 46-Surma and 57-Jubarajnagar Assembly Constituencies respectively.

The announcement of Dr Saha’s name for 8-Bordowali Seat was more-or-less confirmed, but speculations were rife for 6-Agartala seat.

The announcement has ended wild speculations about possible BJP candidate for 6-Agartala Assembly seat. Several names were doing rounds since the by-polls were announced by the ECI – at last Dr Sinha, who was also in the list of probable candidates, became the party nominated candidate.

In 2018 Assembly polls, BJP candidates won in 6-Agartala, 8-Bordowali and 46-Surma seats while 57-Jubarajnagar seat went to CPM candidate.

The by-polls in 6-Agartala and 8-Bordowali Assembly Constituencies were necessitated following resignation of Sudip Roy Barman and Ashish Kumar Saha (Both won on BJP tickets in 2018 polls) who later resigned and quit BJP to return to their old party – Congress.

The 46-Surma Assembly constituency fell vacant following disqualification Ashish Das – who like Barman and Saha won in BJP ticket, later quit the party only to join Trinamool Congress – under Anti-defection law.

The 57-Jubarajnagar fell vacant following the death of CPM candidate – ex-speaker Ramendra Debnath.

The last date for submitting nominations is June 6 next and scrutiny of the nominations will be held on June 7 next.

The last day for withdrawal of nomination is June 9 next.

By-elections in four constituencies will be held on June 23 next. The votes will be counted on June 26 next.
