The Khongjom Day was observed to remember the supreme sacrifice of the hero of Manipur, Paona Brajabashi through different programmes in Agartala on Sunday (April 23). Puthiba Welfare and Cultural Society and Paona Brajabashi Foundation of Tripura jointly organized a programme at the Puthiba Temple premises in Agartala to commemorate the 133rd Martyr’s Day of Paona Brajabashi.
The great warrior of Manipur, Paona Brajabashi fought a battle against the British on the bank of the Khongjom River in 1891. Even as he was defeated and was martyred – his valour, sacrifice and patriotism still inspire the people, said the organizers adding that wherever Manipuri Community lives – in the country or abroad – Manipuris will observe the Day and pay respect to Paona Brajabashi.
The organizers also informed the media that a blood donation camp was organized on Saturday (April 22) as part of paying respect to the great warrior who shed blood for freedom.
Cooperative Minister of Tripura Shukla Charan Noatia paid a floral to Paona Brajabashi. He was accompanied by members of Manipuri Community and social activist Papia Datta.
Paying deep respect, Noatia said it is important that every ethnic community and others conduct programmes highlighting ancestors’ glorious activities and pass on the legacy to the younger generations.
AIR News added: The Khongjom Day remembering the battle fought in the 1891 Anglo-Manipuri War was observed on Sunday at Khongjom in the Thoubal district of Manipur. Manipur Chief Minister N. Biren Singh and Governor Anusuiya Uikey led others in paying befitting tributes to the heroes at the event held at Kheba Ching at Khongjom in Thoubal district.
While delivering the speech, the Chief Minister said that the youths have the responsibility to maintain and protect the country’s dignity, freedom and sovereignty and asserted that independence should not be interpreted in the narrow sense of separatism and regionalism.
Other highlights of the observance include Khongjom Day musical play and the national anthem by Manipur Rifles Unit.
