Cyclone Remal left a trail of destruction across Tripura, causing widespread damage to the power and agriculture sectors. According to preliminary estimates, the power department has suffered losses of over Rs 5 crore. Besides, 1574 houses were damaged and 1220 persons are in relief camps.
Giving details of the damage at a press conference held at the Secretariat on Thursday, Secretary of the Power Department, Abhishek Singh said no loss of life has been reported in the state so far due to the timely precautionary measures taken by the administration to tackle Cyclone Remal. However, the power system has been severely affected in all districts of the state due to the cyclone.
Around 550 km of power lines were damaged across the state, 850 electricity poles were affected, and over 100 transformers were rendered inoperative.
At present, 994 personnel of the power department, along with contractors, are working tirelessly to restore electricity services in the state. Already, about 60% of the work of repairing electricity poles has been completed. The remaining poles will also be repaired and installed expeditiously.
The Secretary added, people from all over the state are calling the power department to resolve their various problems.
The department is taking all necessary steps to address all the calls promptly. He also said various departments, including the Forest Department, SDRF, NDRF, and the state administration, are working together to restore normal electricity services in the state.
At the press conference, State Project Officer of the State Disaster Management Authority, Sharad Das said the Disaster Management department, along with the administration, is actively involved in assessing the damage caused by Remal across the state and bringing the situation back to normal.
He said that according to the information received so far, 1574 houses have been damaged by Cyclone Remal. Currently, 12 relief camps are operational across the state. 1220 people are staying there. Simultaneously, the Disaster Management department is also working on assessing the damage.
Managing Director of Tripura State Electricity Corporation, Debashish Sarkar presented detailed information about the damage caused to the power infrastructure due to Cyclone Remal at the press conference.
