In a recent development that underscores the escalating problem of illegal firearms and drugs in Tripura, the Amtali Police Station, in collaboration with the Border Security Force (BSF), made a significant seizure. The operation led to the recovery of approximately 40,000 yaba tablets, a pistol, and a magazine from a residence in the Matinagar area in Tripura. A suspect, identified as Abu Salem Bhuiyan, aged 59, was also detained in connection with the seizure.

West Tripura Superintendent of Police, Kiran Kumar, briefed the media on Friday about the operation. He said, “Acting on reliable information about the illegal storage of contraband items and firearms, we, along with BSF personnel, raided the residence of Abu Salem Bhuiyan (59) in the bordering area of Matinagar.
The raid resulted in the recovery of a substantial cache of yaba tablets and a 7.65 caliber pistol with five live rounds.”
The market value of the recovered drugs is estimated to be around Rs 20 lakh. The accused, Abu Salem Bhuiyan, has been arrested and was produced before the court on Friday. The police are seeking remand for further interrogation in the case.
This incident brings to light the disturbing trend of firearms becoming a major concern in Tripura, adding to the existing menace of drugs. Alarmingly, even young girls are getting involved in these illegal activities.
Earlier, two young girls were apprehended by Tripura Police in firearms smuggling-related cases and several women were arrested while carrying ganja.
