Unidentified miscreants defaced the statue of late Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi in Kailashahar, triggering huge condemnation.
The incident, which took place under the cover of darkness, adds to a growing list of acts of vandalism that have occurred in the area following the Lok Sabha election results.
The series of vandalism began on June 4, when a CPIM party office was attacked late at night. The following day, June 5, witnessed the desecration of a statue of a revered poet -Himadri Nandan Deb.
Amidst collective anguish over such activities, on June 8, the statue of Rajiv Gandhi, erected by the Kailashahar District Congress in 2009, became the latest target.
Located near the Srirampur Bridge in Paschim Gobindapur, Ward No. 10 of Kailashahar Municipality, this statue has been a site of annual commemorations on Rajiv Gandhi’s birth and death anniversaries.
Even as the culprits involved in the desecration of the poet’s statue are yet to be traced, the miscreants struck again and vandalised late Prime Minister’s statue.
The repeated acts of vandalism sparked serious angst and resentment among people. According to aggrieved people, local administration and police are seemingly inactive in response to these events.
This perceived inaction has only fueled the tension with the vandalism of Rajiv Gandhi’s statue igniting widespread anger among Congress supporters and citizens alike.
Social media quickly buzzed with outrage, leading to fears that the town’s law and order situation could rapidly deteriorate.
Former state Congress president and Kailashahar MLA Birjit Sinha was vocal in his condemnation of the incident. He denounced the vandals as cowards for their nocturnal misdeeds, daring them to show their faces in daylight.
Sinha linked the recent acts of vandalism to the aftermath of the Lok Sabha elections, pointing out that similar attacks had occurred, such as the vandalism of the CPIM Chandipur zonal committee office and the statue of poet Himadri Nandan Deb.
He demanded swift action from the authorities, warning that if the perpetrators are not brought to justice, the Congress would respond decisively.
As the town grapples with these acts of vandalism, Congress supporters came down heavily on the failure of the local administration especially the police.
All eyes are on the local administration to restore order and ensure that such incidents are prevented in the future.
