In a medical feat that underscores the capabilities of district hospitals, a team of expert doctors at Unakoti District Hospital in Tripura successfully performed a complex gallbladder surgery on a critically ill patient on Independence Day.
The 32-year-old woman, a resident of Kailashahar under the Unakoti District, had been enduring excruciating abdominal pain and related symptoms for an extended period. Despite seeking medical attention at the hospital’s outpatient department, her condition deteriorated, necessitating immediate surgical intervention.
A thorough examination by the surgical department, led by Dr. Shubhranil Das, revealed a grave situation: a ruptured gallbladder containing a large stone. Given the patient’s financial constraints, referring her to GBP Hospital in Agartala for the treatment was not a viable option. Faced with a life-threatening situation, the medical team made the high-risk decision to operate within the district hospital.
On August 15, a dedicated team comprising Dr. Shubhranil Das, General Surgeon Dr. Sourab Lodh, Anesthesiologist Dr. Rupamoy Das, Staff Nurse Smriti Das, and OT Technician Mithun Manta successfully removed the gallbladder. The patient is currently under observation and recovering well.
The successful surgery shows the growing capabilities of district hospitals in providing advanced medical care. The operation was conducted free of cost under the Ayushman Bharat scheme. The scheme and the surgical facilities at the District Hospital offered significant relief to the patient’s family, said the relatives. Notably, Unakoti District Hospital has been at the forefront of providing complex surgical treatments, including appendectomies and breast cancer surgeries.
The district health department has hailed the surgical team for their expertise and dedication, and the successful operation has been widely lauded as a major achievement for the region’s healthcare sector.
