A deadly landslide struck the village of Ashwini Tripura Para in the Gardang Panchayat of Santir Bazar Sub-division under South Tripura on Thursday. The incident resulted in the tragic loss of seven lives including five of a family and two of another family.
Chief Minister Dr Manik Saha expressed deep sorrow over the deaths of the villagers.
Notably, three persons of a family were buried alive at the Debipur area of the same sub-division few days ago during the ongoing incessant rains since August 19 last.
Heavy rainfall in the region had been intensifying in the days leading up to the landslide, saturating the ground and making the slopes vulnerable to collapse. The landslide occurred late at night, sweeping away several homes and burying residents in the debris.
Emergency services were immediately alerted, but the strong water currents and challenging terrain hampered rescue efforts. Local residents, however, stepped in to assist in the search for survivors.
The deceased have been identified as Umacharan Tripura (25), Mandira Tripura (23), Prasenjit Tripura (21), Ajay Tripura (16), Rakesh Tripura (18), Jyotsna Tripura (21), and Kumtuisa Tripura (3).
Extending condolences, Dr Saha said, “”I am deeply saddened and heartbroken by the sudden landslide in Ashwini Tripura Para of Shantirbazar Sub-division, which claimed the lives of 7 people from two families, and in the nearby Devipur area of the same sub-division, where another three people from a family lost their lives”.
The Chief Minister also said, “I extend my heartfelt condolences to the bereaved families of these tragic incidents. I know that no amount of compensation can make up for such a loss. However, the state government is announcing a financial assistance of Rs. 4 lakhs each to the families of the deceased.”
He sought the cooperation of all the people of the state during this crisis. “I assure you that the administration is working tirelessly to help the affected people and is standing by them in this difficult time”, he commented.
