Key organizations and stakeholders including Bamboo artisans came together to observe the World Bamboo Day in Agartala on Wednesday and shared experiences and highlight sectoral issues to enhance the development of the bamboo sector in Tripura.
Interacting with the media on the World Bamboo Day today, Chief Minister Dr Manik Saha said, Tripura has 21 species of bamboo, which is a matter of great pride for the people of the state. Various items are being made by utilizing bamboo. Bamboo tiles have already been used in the Tripura Legislative Assembly. He is hopeful that bamboo will play a significant role in Tripura’s economy and that the state government is working towards that goal.
In her inaugural speech, Industries and Commerce Minister Santana Chakma asserted the government of Tripura is giving special importance to the development of bamboo-based industries. She also said on this day, World Bamboo Day is being celebrated in the state along with the entire country. The Minister opined, industries and artisans across the state will be enriched through the Bamboo Mission initiatives.
Organizations like the Bamboo Corporation of India (BCDI), Industrial Growth Development Corporation (IGDC), and North East Cane & Bamboo Development Council (NCE) have laid out their initiatives aimed at boosting the bamboo industry. The Tourism, Industries & Commerce Department also shared their strategic approaches to integrate bamboo products into broader marketplaces.
Financial institutions such as the State Bank of India (SBI), Punjab National Bank (PNB), and the North Eastern Development Finance Corporation Ltd (NEDFI) discussed financial frameworks that could support the growth of bamboo processing units and artisans.
“Our aim is to ensure that bamboo artisans and entrepreneurs have the necessary support to scale their operations and reach new markets,” commented an official.
The consultation also covered the ADB-NBM project, which seeks to leverage international expertise and funding to further enhance the capabilities of the bamboo sector in India. Stakeholders discussed the potential for new technologies and innovations that could propel the industry forward.
Secretary of the Industries and Commerce department Kiran Gitte delivered the keynote address.
