Two hospitals in Tripura – Unakoti District Hospital and Atal Bihari Vajpayee Regional Cancer Center (ABV-RCC) – achieved significant milestones with successful surgeries, highlighting the advancements in healthcare and the dedication of medical teams within the region.
Healthcare workers and specialists at Unakoti District Hospital performed a landmark surgery on Monday by conducting a C-section on an HIV-positive mother, setting an example for medical care and surgical safety within district hospitals. The patient was admitted on October 28 with labor pains, and an initial examination revealed her HIV-positive status. Given her increasing labor pains and the urgency of her condition, the medical team chose to carry out the C-section on-site rather than referring her to another facility.
Special precautions were taken, including the preparation of a fully separate set of safety kits and surgical instruments to ensure the procedure’s safety. The dedicated team, led by obstetrician and gynecologist Dr. Sumit Das, with anesthetist Dr. Rupam Das, OT Sister-in-charge Sathi Ghosh, nursing officer Karuna Debbarma, OT technician Suranjit Das, and OT GDA Shubhankar Saha, delivered a healthy baby around 1 p.m.
The Additional District Health Officer shared the information in a press release.
Meanwhile, expert cancer surgeons at the Atal Bihari Vajpayee Regional Cancer Center (ABV-RCC) accomplished a historic feat by successfully performing the first complex lung tumor surgery in a state-run facility on Tuesday. The patient, a 36-year-old woman, had endured persistent chest pain and, after undergoing extensive diagnostic testing, was diagnosed with a lung tumor. She required immediate surgery. After being admitted on October 23, 2024, doctors swiftly prepared for surgery due to the tumor’s critical nature.
The expert surgical team removed the tumor from the lower lobe of her lung on Monday, with the patient now recovering under careful supervision. Her family expressed heartfelt gratitude to the team at ABV-RCC for providing specialized cancer treatment within the state, sparing them from the challenges of seeking care elsewhere.
