Agartala May 17, 2025: In a transformative step toward bolstering higher education and fostering regional development, the Government of Tripura has unveiled plans to establish three new Government Degree Colleges in the state.
The State Education (Higher) Department announced the initiative underscoring Tripura’s commitment to expanding access to quality education and empowering its youth with opportunities for academic and professional growth.
Set to commence operations in the 2025–26 academic session, these institutions are poised to become catalysts for socio-economic progress in their respective regions.
Three New Degree Colleges
The Tripura government has taken a significant stride toward enhancing the state’s educational landscape by approving the establishment of three new Government Degree Colleges in Ambassa (Aspirational Dhalai District), Karbook, and Kakraban (both in Gomati District).
This landmark decision, formalized through official notifications issued on May 15, 2025, aims to address the growing demand for accessible higher education and promote inclusive development across the state.
The new colleges are strategically located to serve underserved areas, ensuring that students of aspirational blocks in Dhalai and remote areas in Gomati districts have greater access to quality academic programs.
By offering a diverse range of courses tailored to regional needs, these institutions are expected to empower local communities, enhance employability, and contribute to the socio-economic upliftment of Tripura.
According to the Education (Higher) Department, the colleges will commence operations in the 2025–26 academic session, with course offerings and student intake capacities to be finalized based on regional demand and available resources.
The curriculum, academic regulations, and examination systems will align with the standards of affiliating universities and adhere to the State Government’s educational policies.
To ensure smooth operations, the department will oversee the appointment of principals, teaching faculty, and non-teaching staff.
Each college will maintain comprehensive records, including certificates, financial accounts, and administrative affairs, under its institutional name from the outset.
This structured approach reflects the government’s dedication to establishing robust and sustainable educational institutions.
Tripura Chief Minister Dr. Manik Saha hailed the initiative as a milestone in the state’s educational journey.

In a social media post, he stated, “As part of our unwavering commitment to enhancing access to higher education, the State Government has approved the establishment of three new Government Degree Colleges in Ambassa (Dhalai District), and Kakraban and Karbook in Gomati District, starting from the 2025–26 academic session.
This decision will significantly benefit students in these regions by providing access to quality higher education and fostering academic excellence.”
