Agartala Apr 13: As the Bengali month of Chaitra ushers in warmer days in Agartala, the city comes alive with the vibrant Chaitra Sale 2025 —a festive prelude to Poila Boishakh, the Bengali New Year, set to be celebrated on April 15, 2025.
This annual shopping carnival is now in full swing, transforming Agartala into a bustling hub of discounts and high-spirited commerce.
Despite the sweltering heat, heavy humidity, and the looming threat of Kaal Baishakhi storms, crowds continue to pour into the city’s markets, driven by both tradition and the lure of good bargains.
The Agartala Municipal Corporation has allotted the entire stretch of Shakuntala Road to vendors, rent-free, to showcase their wares for the annual mela since April 2.
But as the number of shoppers swelled, stalls spilled onto the footpaths from Kaman Chowmuhani to Post Office Chowmuhani.
The Chaitra Sale 2025 fever has even extended to both sides of Orient Chowmuhani, adding more color to the celebration.

The Chaitra Sale 2025 in Agartala carries a unique charm, especially with markets pulsing with life and reflecting Tripura’s rich handloom heritage.

Stalls are packed with vibrant cotton and khadi sarees, the traditional tribal attire Risa, and other indigenous weaves—each piece telling a story of local craftsmanship.
Key shopping areas like Shakuntala Road, Battala, and Kaman Chowmuhani have turned into treasure troves of deals on apparel, home décor, household accessories, and kitchenware.
Adding a touch of sustainability are the stalls featuring bamboo crafts and pottery—perfect for eco-conscious buyers.
Bamboo baskets, mats, jewelry, and clay items attract curious onlookers and devoted shoppers alike.
Marigold garlands and puja essentials, meanwhile, cater to the spiritual needs of the New Year.
Even under the oppressive humidity, crowds – especially women from various age groups, communities, and faiths—navigate the busy stalls with determination.
They emerge with arms full of purchases and faces lit up with smiles, undeterred by the long hours of bargaining and the sheer volume of goods on display.
“Everyone’s complaining about the heat, but we’re more afraid of the dark clouds gathering in the sky. One good storm could put an end to all this,” said a group of buyers, joined in agreement by nearby vendors.
“Let the Kaal Baishakhi wait a few more days.”
For nearly two weeks, eager shoppers have been arriving early, kicking up dust on their way to stalls, yet refusing to be slowed by the elements.
The Chaitra Sale caters to every budget. Bargain hunters scoop up nighties, salwars, and dupattas, while others opt to splurge on home accessories and festive items.
Sweating but smiling, shoppers hustle through the crowds, each deal feeling like a small victory.
Despite the exhausting heat, the atmosphere remains buoyant. Sweating but smiling, shoppers hustle through the crowds to avoid the last-minute rush, each deal feeling like a small victory.
Loud vendor calls and catchy music blaring from speakers add to the energetic chaos, making for a truly immersive experience.
However, amidst the revelry, the Chaitra Sale 2025 faces a growing challenge—from the rise of e-commerce.
“We’re up against tough competition from platforms like Flipkart and Amazon,” lamented Suman Hrishi Das, one of four young entrepreneurs running a ladies’ garment stall.
“The younger generation prefers the convenience of online shopping. They skip the heat, the crowd, and the intense bargaining – yet still get big discounts. Our sales have been dropping every year because of this digital shift.”
“Oh my dear Boudi, come and see our beautiful dresses for you and your family!”
With just one more day left, Suman’s sale-call – “Oh my dear Boudi, come see our beautiful dresses for you and your family!” – rings out louder than ever, cutting through the din.
With hopes of a prosperous New Year, both buyers and sellers are eager to close the season on a high note, sealing their day with discount-happiness, festive cheer and good business. (Courtesy: Tripuratimes Newspaper)
