The opposition CPIM in Tripura has once again strongly criticized the BJP-led State Government, holding it responsible for recent communal tensions in the state. CPIM leaders alleged that the government has failed to address the pressing issues faced by the public and is instead stoking communal divisions to divert attention from its shortcomings.
At a press conference in Agartala on Friday, CPIM leaders pointed to recent communal unrest in Kadamtala and Pekuchhera under North Tripura District, accusing the ruling party of instigating these incidents. The briefing followed the conclusion of a day-long state committee meeting of the party. Leader of the Opposition and State Secretary of CPIM, Jitendra Choudhury, informed the media about the resolutions from the committee meeting and outlined the party’s upcoming protest programs.
Choudhury stated that the Left in Tripura will organize a series of protests against the deteriorating conditions, specifically citing the unchecked rise in essential commodity prices, growing unemployment, and the worsening law and order situation. Referring to public safety in Tripura, Choudhury remarked, “While the situation is deteriorating, the Chief Minister and the DGP are making hollow claims about law and order improvements.” He pointed to the recent murder of a businessman in Agartala and an alleged custodial death of a young man in South Tripura, saying, “The situation has become so grave that miscreants are brazenly attacking people in the city center, and a young tribal man lost his life due to alleged police torture.”
In addition to criticizing the government’s handling of communal tensions, the Leader of the Opposition claimed that the administration is restricting the police from taking necessary actions. “This government has tied the hands of the police. A faction within the force is operating under the influence of the ruling party to suppress crime incidents, which has tarnished the reputation of the entire police administration,” he told reporters.
Choudhury continued his criticism, alleging widespread corruption in the government, spanning from education to other sectors. Referring to a recent letter he sent to the government, he accused the administration of corrupt recruitment practices at MBB University, claiming that the Vice Chancellor is violating UGC guidelines in the hiring process.
He also condemned the BJP for allegedly compromising the state’s youth by turning Tripura into an “addiction corridor.” He stated that the CPIM plans to launch a series of protest programs aimed at highlighting the struggles of the people and the perceived “failures” of the BJP-led Government.
In his hour long press conference Choudhury concludded calling for a united opposition against what he termed the “misrule” of the BJP-led coalition, emphasizing that the CPIM is determined to intensify its movement against the ruling government in Tripura.
