BJP gains as Oppn parties suffer defection, Tripura CM welcomes 700 voters

The ruling BJP in Tripura received a significant boost as approximately 700 voters formally joined the saffron brigade in Banamalipur Assembly Constituency in Agartala on Sunday.

The joining event in the Banamalipur constituency is crucial for the saffron party as it’s State president Rajib Bhattacharjee contested from this seat but was defeated by the Congress candidate who also won the support of the CPIM and other Leftist parties. Veteran Congress leader, Gopal Roy polled 17128 votes, in contrast, Bhattacharjee secured only 15759 votes.

To gain the lost ground before the upcoming Lok Sabha election defection on a large scale among the Congress and CPIM is what BJP looked for. According to the ruling party sources, more opposition supporters will quit their respective parties – especially CPIM and Congress – and join the BJP in the coming days. Today’s joining will strengthen the party organization in Banamalipur, sources in BJP asserted.

Chief Minister of Tripura Prof. Dr. Manik Saha welcomed the new entrants to the Party at an event in Kalyani under the Banamalipur Constituency on Saturday. He expressed that this shift towards the BJP signifies the people's recognition that real development and effective governance are achievable under a BJP government.

"The Modi wave is being witnessed throughout the state. Voters from the opposition camp continue to join the Bharatiya Janata Party in various parts of Tripura, inspired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi's unwavering commitment to public welfare," Dr. Saha remarked. "This trend is evident across the state."

Addressing the gathering, the Chief Minister highlighted the growing influence of Prime Minister Narendra Modi's service-oriented approach on voters in the state. Dr. Saha noted that inspired by the commitment of Prime Minister Modi to public welfare, voters from opposition parties are increasingly aligning themselves with the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in Tripura.

Dr. Saha emphasized that the common people of Tripura yearn for peace and harmony. During the rule of the CPIM, the Indian National Congress was the sole opposition party. However, Congress, in the eyes of the public, failed to meet their expectations and eroded their trust. In 2014, when Prime Minister Modi came to power at the national level, the people of Tripura began to understand the principles of good governance and development. Under his leadership, the BJP was able to form the state government in 2018.

Regarding the recently held 2023 election, Dr. Saha and other BJP leaders actively encouraged the people to engage in a peaceful electoral process, free from violence. Their efforts contributed to a tranquil and orderly election, culminating in the BJP retaining power.

"We aim to break free from the scientific rigging that was characteristic of the CPIM's rule. Even the by-election was conducted peacefully," Dr. Saha added.

The growing attraction of voters from the opposition to the BJP, coupled with Chief Minister Saha's insights, underscores the changing political landscape in Tripura. The influence of Prime Minister Modi's governance model and commitment to public welfare is clearly a driving force behind these political shifts in the state.
