Covid: Alertness, adherence to norms can save us, doctors say

Covid situation in Tripura is in the threshold of becoming a serious crisis - importantly, the medical fraternity of the State has expressed worry as unlike Covid in 2020, this time children are also found to be Covid positive, experts commented in Agartala on Wednesday. However, experts urged people not to panic but to follow Covid appropriate behiviour and consult local health personnel before taking decision to rush off to the Hospital.

Enewstime-TripuraMeanwhile, fresh 240 persons were found infected with Covid while three persons died today with positivity rate is 4.98 per cent. However, 75 persons recovered and released from hospitals in the State.

Explaining reasons behind deep concern, Covid 19 surveillance officer Deep Kumar Debbarma cautioned,“The Covid 19 positivity rate in Tripura is hovering around critical five percent mark leaving the experts in Covid 19 management in serious worry. If the same trend continues and the chain of infection is not checked immediately, the situation may become worse”.

Besides, the members of the high level technical committee of the AGMC and GBP hospital also sounded alarm and cautioned people.

Critical factors

Addressing a joint press conference at the AGMC conference hall, where members from IMA and ATGDA also remained present, Debbarma said, “The next one and a half month is very critical for the state as the test positivity rate has already crossed the critical level of five percent. If we don’t maintain Covid appropriate behaviour the spurt in cases may get increased further”.

According to him, the number of critical patients admitted to GBP hospital also increased in last couple of days.

“Right now 93 patients are admitted in GBP hospital Agartala which is the biggest Covid 19 health facility of the state. Fifty percent of the patients admitted here are in critical conditions. A trend has been observed among the patients. As soon as some mild symptoms develop, patients start panicking and rush to GBP hospital which should be avoided as critical patients should get the desired treatment. Mild symptomatic patients should consult with the healthcare workers before taking any decision”, said Debbarma.

Debbarma also said that in 2021 as of now 21 healthcare workers had been detected positive, who got infected in the line of duty. “In 2021, a total 21 healthcare workers including doctors tested positive to the deadly contagion, so far and among them, 8 are active cases including four doctors.

Director of Health and Family welfare department Dr Radha Debbarma said, “There are plans to set up a 200 bedded Covid facility in every district but the most important thing is to follow the Covid appropriate behaviour”.

Another senior doctor taking over him said, “Children are being also found positive in this second wave which has been rare in the first wave. As of now, 38 children below ten years of age have been detected positive and most of the cases are reported from those families where adults carried the infection. Testing is also less among children because of very rare instances of such positivity found earlier. We have to be prepared for that risk too”.
