As Tripura is gearing up for the August 8 Panchayat polls, CPIM candidates were reportedly forced to withdraw their nominations in Sabroom under the South Tripura District owing to threats and intimidation from BJP workers.
Blaming the BJP’s attitude, the Sabroom subdivision committee of CPIM organized a press conference on Monday, the last day for withdrawing nominations for the three-tier panchayat elections. Present at this press conference were Sabroom Subdivision Committee Secretary Arun Tripura, former MLA of 39 Manu-Bankul Assembly Constituency Prabhat Choudhury, and CPIM leader Biplab Sanyal.
Arun Tripura and Prabhat Choudhury alleged that the ruling party is scared of the three-tier panchayat elections. Since the submission of nominations, BJP workers have repeatedly harassed and intimidated CPIM candidates, forcing them to withdraw their nominations due to safety concerns.
On behalf of the CPIM party, nominations were submitted in Satchand and Poangbari RD blocks of the Sabroom subdivision. However, the ruling BJP’s miscreants allegedly went to the homes of the nominated CPIM candidates, threatened them with various kinds of intimidation and death threats, and forcibly took several candidates from their homes to withdraw their nominations.
According to the latest information, in the Satchand block, out of the 218 gram panchayat seats, BJP is contesting all 218 seats, CPIM is contesting seven seats, and TIPRA Motha is contesting three seats. In the Panchayat Samiti, out of 11 seats, BJP is contesting all 11 seats, CPIM is contesting eight seats, and the National Congress is contesting one seat. On the other hand, in the Poangbari block, out of 63 gram panchayat seats, the BJP is contesting all 63 seats, and independents are contesting three seats.
