Do not Graze Immediately: Tripura ARDD Warns Livestock Farmers after devastating Flood in State

In view of the recent devastating floods across Tripura, the Animal Resources Development Department (ARDD) advised the livestock farmers to avoid grazing of animal in the field immediately after seepage of flood water as soil may contain bacterial spores etc.

The advisory, titled "Preparedness and Response Measures for Livestock During Floods," issued on Monday is designed to provide a structured approach for the protection and management of livestock during and after flood events. The ARDD, in collaboration with the Tripura Tribal Areas Autonomous District Council (TTAADC), has outlined a series of strategic actions to be implemented by officials across the state.

Central to the advisory is the emphasis on the swift and effective evacuation and rescue of livestock from flood-prone areas.

Another critical aspect of the advisory is the focus on feeding strategies during floods. Flooding results in the submergence of grazing areas and damage to forage, leading to a scarcity of food for livestock. The advisory addresses this challenge by recommending a range of alternative feeding options to ensure that livestock continue to receive adequate nutrition during the flood crisis.

“Provide livestock with alternative feeds such as Jackfruit leaves, Hibiscus, Banana leaves, Peepal, Neem, Subabool, Jamun plants, Bamboo leaves, Tapioca, and Water hyacinth”, the advisory suggested and added, these alternative feeds should be mixed with paddy straw to create a balanced diet for the animals. To counteract the stress caused by reduced food availability, livestock should be given additional vitamins and minerals.

The advisory also underlined, “Avoid grazing of animal in the field immediately after seepage of flood water as soil may contain bacterial spores etc.”

The advisory also recommended the livestock owners to avoid providing stagnant flood water to the animals.

“Prioritize water supply for lactating and pregnant animas over non-productive ones”, the advisory suggested.

As flood increases risk of several diseases, livestock owners have been requested to ensure vaccination, deworming, sanitation, providing clean water, vector control and  medical care as needed.

To mitigate the  effects of flooding on the livestock, the advisory also stressed on imparting training and improving awareness.

Besides, the ARDD urged its officials to deploy trained veterinary personnel and collaborate with NGOs in flood-prone areas before the onset of the monsoon season.
