First Covid death in current wave recorded in Tripura, but people remain reckless

Even as people are well aware of the first Covid death in Tripura in current wave, lackluster behaviour of people of different age groups has become a major threat to safety of public health. Apart from common people, the political leaders and supporters are also violating Covid norms in Agartala and also in other areas.

As per the official report, Tripura recorded the first Covid death of ongoing 4th wave on Sunday (July 17).

During the last 24 hours, the number of single day Covid positive cases increased to 290 out of the 2546 samples tested and positivity rate spiked to 11.39 per cent. Total number of active cases increased to 1282 and total 37 persons recovered.

Like previous years, West Tripura district is the worst sufferer with the highest - 157 new cases in the last 24 hours.

As part the latest report, Sepahijala district has recorded 33 cases, Khowai 12 cases, Gomati 26 cases, South Tripura 20 cases, Dhalai 15 cases, Unakoti 6 cases and North Tripura 21 cases.

Health department sources said, Covid virus is affecting people of all age groups - infants, children, youths and elderly people.

The Health department issued notification making mask wearing mandatory. Tripura Chief Minister Dr Manik Saha also urged people to wear mask and follow Covid guidelines. He himself wear mask to make people aware.

Pity, most of the political leaders and their supporters eschew mask even in big gatherings, rallies and meetings. Political parties - ruling and opposition - are flouting Covid norms.

Common people too are reckless. Only a few could be found in markets who are wearing mask. In public transport, most of the passengers eschew mask.

Educated youngsters, instead of inspiring others, are flouting Covid norms. In restaurant, road side food stall and other popular meeting places, people are busy in discussing alarming Covid situation without wearing masks.

The situation appears to be slowly slipping out of hands due to irresponsible behaviour of people and political parties of the State.

Unless checked, the situation may become critical as festive season is ensuing. Importantly, Assembly polls are also knocking at the door - so, following Covid appropriate behaviour is important for safety of oneself, family members and the society.
