First VC of Tripura Central University Arunoday Saha honoured with Padma Shri award

Arunoday Saha from Tripura has been honoured with Padma Shri award for his outstanding contribution in the field of ‘Literature and Education’. He was the first vice-chancellor of Tripura University when it became a central university in 2007.

Arunoday Saha was born in a Bengali family at Bishalgarh in Tripura. His father, Abani Mohan Saha, was a businessman. Saha completed his B.A. (from Presidency College, Kolkata), M.A. (from Calcutta University) and Ph.D. (from Utah State University) in Economics. He retired on 18 February 2013.

Arunoday Saha from Tripura honoured with Padma ShriGreetings started to pour in soon after the announcement of Arunoday Saha’s name as the Padma Shri Awardee.

Chief Minister of Tripura Dr Manki Saha congratulated him. In social media post, the Chief Minister wrote, “Heartfelt congratulations to former Vice-Chancellor of Tripura University Prof. Arunoday Saha ji on being conferred the prestigious Padma Shri award in Literature & Education!

This well-deserved recognition honors his remarkable contributions to the fields of education & literature.

As a renowned academic and writer, his contributions have inspired countless individuals”.

Notably, Padma Awards - one of the highest civilian Awards of the country, are conferred in three categories, namely, Padma Vibhushan, Padma Bhushan and Padma Shri.

The Awards are given in various disciplines/ fields of activities, viz.- art, social work, public affairs, science and engineering, trade and industry, medicine, literature and education, sports, civil service, etc.

‘Padma Vibhushan’ is awarded for exceptional and distinguished service; ‘Padma Bhushan’ for distinguished service of high order and ‘Padma Shri’ for distinguished service in any field. The awards are announced on the occasion of Republic Day every year.

These Awards are conferred by the President of India at ceremonial functions which are held at RashtrapatiBhawan usually around March/ April every year.

For the year 2025, the President has approved conferment of 139 Padma Awards including1 duo case (in a duo case, the Award is counted as one) as per the list below. The list comprises 7 Padma Vibhushan, 19 Padma Bhushan and 113 Padma Shri Awards. 23 of the awardees are women and the list also includes 10 persons from the category of Foreigners/NRI/PIO/OCI and13Posthumous awardees.
