Gomati River Floods in Tripura: Over 8,500 Affected, livestock starving, Urgent Call for Animal Feed

Even as the water level in the Gomati River is receding, people’s plight remains unabated. Still flowing above the danger level, water from the Gomati River inundated many more new areas on Sunday pushing up the number of flood-affected families in relief camps in the Sonamura sub-division.

According to the flood-affected people, the administration has made adequate arrangements for the people to take shelter in the relief camps – however, the domestic animals are starving.

“We are getting enough supply of food and drinking water. The Administration is taking good care of us. However, we are worried about our cows and goats. These animals are starving as there is no one to provide them food”, one of the flood victims of Nalchhar under the Sonamura sub-division.

The flood victims made an appeal to the administration to arrange some food for their domestic animals as well. When the Sub-Divisional Magistrate was contacted, he informed the media that a letter had been sent to the state's Animal Husbandry Development Department on an urgent basis urging them to look into this issue.

Sources said, an official from the Animal Husbandry Department may visit the affected areas on Monday to inquire about this matter. According to another source, there is a strong possibility of some animal feed arriving on Monday from the Animal Husbandry Department.

Notably, water has entered many new places in the Sonamura sub-division in the last 24 hours. Due to this, the district administration has had to increase the number of relief camps by 11 more. Currently, the number of people affected by the flood in the sub-division has increased to 8579.

The situation may improve if there is no rain on Sunday night or Monday.

Meantime, along with the Administration, several organizations have come forward to help the flood-affected people. The NDRF personnel are working tirelessly to rescue the flood victims.
