Haduklak Para in Tripura offers hopes to Bru refugees

A non-descript hamlet, Haduklak Para in Ambassa suddenly became abuzz with activities after it scripted its name in the history of the settlement of displaced and helpless Bru people. Chirping of birds at Haduklak Para announces the end of 24 years of uncertainty, the pathos of eviction and the saga of surviving on doles.

Located around 30 kilometers away from Ambassa, Haduklak Para ushered a new dawn for at least 350 Bru families who were so long languishing in refugee camps at Kanchanpur and were staring at a bleak future.

The transition from uncertainty-ridden days of refugee camps to houses under the shadow of the green canopy took an agonizing 24 years. Even after the quadripartite agreement between Tripura, Mizoram, representatives of Bru refugees and the Central Government was signed, the implementation of the agreement faced local resistance and protests. Besides, country-wide Corona rage cast dark clouds on the implementation issue.

However, overcoming all the hurdles, the process to rehabilitate the Bru refugees started from refugee camps in Kanchanpur sub-division from Monday. Buses carrying Bru refugees reached Haduklak Para with the hope of a bright future.

District Magistrate of Dhalai Govekar Mayur Ratilal and Sub Divisional Magistrate of Ambassa J.V. Duati along with other officials were constantly monitoring the process of rehabilitation at Haduklak Para.

Several families clubbed together and settled in clusters. The administration is focusing on providing housing facilities and other necessities. In a phased manner other facilities will be provided.

Speaking about the rehabilitation process, DM Ratilal said, "At the first phase they are provided with housing and other basic amenities. Electricity and other works would follow it".

Some of the Bru people who came to Haduklak Para expressed their happiness for ending a long period of uncertainty. However, the task of settling down at a new place is not an easy task either. Amidst happiness, some of the relocated Bru people are pondering over a ‘new form of uncertainty’ in new life, out of the confinement of refugee camp. Despite all these, Bru people are desperately praying for a good life and Haduklak Para is providing them a place to look beyond their gloomy and violent past.
