Honoring Mothers and Nature: Tripura Students to Plant Saplings Named After their Mothers

In a bid to promote environmental awareness and sustainability among the younger generation, the State Education Department of Tripura has initiated a unique plantation drive titled "Plant for Mom." This initiative mandates every school student to plant at least one sapling, named after their mother, and to nurture it throughout the year.

The decision aligns with Prime Minister Narendra Modi's initiative. The Prime Minister launched the 'Plant for Mother' campaign. The Prime Minister inaugurated this campaign by planting a Peepal tree sapling at Buddha Jayanti Park in New Delhi on World Environment Day.

Motivated by the Prime Minister’s example and the urgent need to combat climate change as well as environmental degradation, the Tripura School Education Department has devised this special drive and directed the District Education Officers to implement the special plantation drive in their respective districts.

The main objective of the initiative is to combat the adverse effects of environmental exploitation, such as heat waves and rising temperatures, by encouraging widespread tree planting in schools and surrounding communities. Apart from planting a sapling, the initiative also aims at nurturing and caring the plants.

This special plantation drive will have to be completed by  June 30, 2024. For saplings/ plants, the District Offices of the Forest Department, Agricultural & Farmers' Welfare Department & Horticulture Department, Govt. of Tripura may be contacted.

Key features of the "Plant for Mom" drive include:

1. Student Participation: Each student will plant at least one sapling named after their mother.

2. Year-Long Care: Students will be responsible for the care and nurturing of their saplings throughout the year.

3. Community Involvement: Planting will take place in schools, student habitations, and neighboring areas to ensure a broad environmental impact.
