Hospital and cemetery walls collapsed, Livestock Killed: Teliamura in Tripura Grapples with Cyclone Remal's Fury

Heavy rains triggered by Cyclone Remal have wreaked havoc in Teliamura, resulting in widespread damage and death of livestock. One of the most significant incidents occurred at the Teliamura Subdivision Hospital, where a massive wall collapsed after a landslip due to the torrential downpour. Similarly, in the mixed Hindu-Muslim village of Baishgharia, the boundary wall of a minority cemetery gave way, causing damage to a neighboring Hindu family's home and killing their livestock.

On boundary wall collapse, victim Prabir Das, a resident of Baishgharia, recounted the harrowing events and said the boundary wall of the cemetery, situated just eight to ten feet from my house, collapsed during the storm, crushing my cowshed and resulting in the death of a big cow.

"The wall was constructed in an unplanned manner and without maintaining quality standards," Das alleged, inadequate construction practices by the cemetery authority as the cause of this unfortunate incident.

The affected residents, including Das, have voiced their concerns over the poor construction and the lack of oversight by the authorities. Despite visits from the Tehsildar and the local village head, the absence of senior officials has left the community feeling neglected. The villagers demanded adequate compensation for their losses and warned that the administration would be held accountable for any further incidents if their demands were not met.

The impact of Cyclone Remal's rains extends beyond the boundary wall collapses. In Baishgharia, the heavy rainfall has severely damaged the local Madrassa (Islamic school), adding to the woes of the community. Farmers in this agriculture-dominated area are reporting extensive damage to their vegetable crops due to water logging, compounding the difficulties faced by residents.

Trishnabari, a locality near the Teliamura railway station, has also been severely affected, with roads and houses submerged under water. The Teliamura Municipality area is experiencing similar issues, with several roads rendered impassable due to flooding.

The situation prompted the subdivisional administration to take precautionary measures. The water level in the Khowai River in Teliamura has risen above the danger mark, leading officials to issue warnings via loudspeakers, urging people living near the river to move to safer shelters.
