Indian Army soldier Shubhankar Bhowmik from Amarpur under the Gomati District of Tripura was martyred while on duty at the Siachen border in Jammu on Saturday.
In the tragic incident, he was buried under snow during an avalanche in the treacherous terrain of Siachen.
The 32-year-old Army jawan was a resident of the Birganj Gram Panchayat in Amarpur. He is survived by his wife and a two-and-a-half-year-old daughter.
A pall of gloom descended as the heart-breaking news reached the family on Tuesday morning.
Chief Minister Dr. Manik Saha and other political figures mourned the demise of the soldier who was from Assam regiment.
In a social media post, Dr Saha said, "I am deeply saddened by the news of the demise of Nayek Shubhankar Bhowmik, a valiant soldier of the Assam Regiment of the Indian Army, who hailed from Birganj and was serving at the Siachen Glacier in Jammu and Kashmir.
I pray to God for the eternal peace of his departed soul and offer my heartfelt condolences to his bereaved family. Om Shanti."
Transport Minister Sushanta Chowdhury also expressed grief at the demise of the brave soldier.
In a condolence message, the Minister said, "I am deeply saddened by his untimely demise. During this difficult time, I extend my heartfelt condolences to his bereaved family and friends. I pray to the Almighty for the eternal peace of his departed soul. My deepest sympathies are with his family, friends, and followers. Om Shanti!"
According to family sources, the mortal remains of the martyred soldier will arrive at Amarpur on Thursday. The news of his sacrifice has plunged the entire town of Amarpur into mourning, with residents expressing grief and solidarity with the bereaved family.
