The treatment of mental illnesses is a complex and challenging task. Ensuring the well-being of individuals with mental health issues and reintegrating them into normal life is a difficult endeavor, said Chief Minister of Tripura Dr Manik Saha.
In his inaugural speech at the 25th Annual Conference of the Indian Psychiatric Society, Tripura State Branch on Friday, Dr Saha also added, the role of psychiatrists is crucial in this process.
The Conference was held at the Swami Vivekananda Auditorium of Tripura Medical College and B.R. Ambedkar Teaching Hospital on Friday.
Dr Manik Saha emphasized that preventing mental illness requires changes in lifestyle, abstaining from addictions, and practicing regular yoga.
He also noted the critical role of citizens from all sectors of society and the guardians of mentally ill patients. Public awareness is essential in this regard.
Furthermore, when mentally ill individuals recover, it is the responsibility of society to ensure their acceptance and inclusion.
The Chief Minister further stated that depression, anxiety, and addiction are major contributors to mental illness.
To address this, Narsinghgarh has a Mental Health Institute dedicated to treating such conditions, and the state government is focused on modernizing and improving this facility.
Additionally, with the support of the Donor Ministry, a rehabilitation center for addiction recovery will be established in Sepahijala’s Bishramganj.
Speaking about healthcare improvements in the state, the Chief Minister shared that nearly free kidney transplants are now being successfully performed in Tripura.
He also mentioned that well-established companies from outside the state are expressing interest in investing in the healthcare sector.
Srija Hospital from Manipur has shown interest in setting up a super-specialty hospital in the state.
The state government is actively inviting external investors to further enhance healthcare services.
The Chief Minister proudly noted that Tripura ranks first in the country in health security for its people, thanks to initiatives such as the Ayushman Bharat – Prime Minister Jan Aarogya Yojana and the Chief Minister’s Jan Aarogya Yojana.
At the conference, several distinguished psychiatrists were honored, including Dr. A.K. Nath, Dr. Jiban Chakraborty, Dr. Bimal Krishna Bhowmick, Dr. Jyotirmoy Ghosh, Dr. Sajal Gupta, and the wife of the late Dr. Rupomoy Wadedder.
Other notable speakers included Dr. Sanjeev Debbarma, Director of the Health and Family Welfare Department, Dr. Shree Kumar Mukherjee, President of the Eastern Region of the Indian Psychiatric Society, Dr. Anjan Das, Director of the Health and Disease Prevention Department, Professor Dr. H.P. Sharma, Director of the Health and Medical Department, Dr. Arindam Dutta, Principal of Tripura Medical College, and Dr. Dipayan Sarkar, Chairperson of the Tripura State Branch of the Indian Psychiatric Society.
As part of the Annual Conference of the Indian Psychiatric Society, Tripura State Branch, the Chief Minister also officially unveiled a commemorative booklet during the event.
