India’s official entry for the Oscars this year, Laapataa Ladies, has a strong connection to Tripura, thanks to the talent of screenwriter Biplab Goswami.
A proud alumnus of Bodhjung Boys’ School and Maharaja Bir Bikram (MBB) College in Agartala, Goswami’s journey from the small northeastern state to the global stage is a story of perseverance and talent.
After completing his schooling and graduation in Tripura, Goswami honed his craft at the prestigious Satyajit Ray Film and Television Institute, where he pursued courses in direction and screenwriting.
The film, Laapataa Ladies, directed by Kiran Rao and produced by Aamir Khan Productions, premiered on Netflix and quickly garnered immense attention.
Within its first week, it became one of the most-watched films on the platform. Over the following months, its popularity only grew, leading to its selection as India’s Oscar entry—a significant milestone for the Indian film industry.
Biplab Goswami’s journey with the film began in 2018 when he participated in a national screenwriting competition, earning the second prize.
His screenplay caught the eye of Aamir Khan, who immediately saw its potential. Originally titled Two Brides, the film went through various stages of development before becoming Laapataa Ladies.
