Minor Girl Abducted in Tripura 3 days ago, Police under fire for alleged inaction

A sense of panic and outrage has gripped the Baspukur area under the Jatrapur Police Station in Tripura following the abduction of a 13-year-old girl student. The incident occurred on Wednesday (September 25), when the girl, a seventh-grader at the Banspukura High school, was returning home.

According to reports, a group of unidentified men forcibly abducted the girl near the Sonamura NC Nagar area. The girl's family immediately filed a complaint with the Jatrapur police station, accusing one Humayun Kabir and others of being involved in the abduction.

“Despite three days passing since the incident, the police have been unable to locate the girl or arrest the suspects. This ineptitude has fueled public anger, with residents accusing the authorities of negligence and incompetence. Police are now seeking three more days. We want immediate action against the accused persons and rescue the girl”, said the agitating villagers and students.

Frustrated with the lack of progress, the local community staged a protest on Friday, blocking the Sonamura-Kanthalia road. Amid scorching heat, students and locals shouted slogans demanding prompt recovery of the abducted minor girl. They also demanded to apprehend the perpetrators without further delay.

The police, who arrived at the scene to disperse the crowd, have been met with fierce resistance from the protesters. The community has expressed deep dissatisfaction with the police's response, alleging that they are not taking the matter seriously. The villagers sought intervention of the Chief Minister Dr Manik Saha. They also drew attention of the Sonamura SDM,  Tripura Women’s Commission and Child protection bodies.

As the days are passing, there are growing fears for the girl's safety. The community is demanding a thorough investigation and swift justice for the victim.
