A man and his wife died after their mud house collapsed due to heavy rain. Their two daughters in the house were also injured in the tragic incident, which occurred in Mekhlipara near Agartala in the West Tripura District.
The deceased couple are Jhuma Tanti (26) and Pranesh Tanti (35). The incident occurred in the late Tuesday night.
Speaking to the media, a relative of the deceased persons said, Pranesh Tanti and his family went to sleep in their house after dinner on Tuesday night. Amidst incessant rains, the family members heard a loud noise at around 12.30 am.
Rushing out, they found that the mud house had collapsed, trapping all four family members inside. Although the fire department was notified immediately, they allegedly did not respond to the call.
The locals began the rescue operation without waiting for the fire service personnel. Inside the house, Pranesh Tanti, his wife, and their two daughters were trapped. Among them, one was a three-month-old infant, and the other was a 12-year-old girl.
They were all pulled out of debris and taken to Rani Bazar Hospital initially and then referred to GBP Hospital in Agartala for better treatment.
However, the attending doctors at the GB Hospital declared that Jhuma Tanti had already died. About an hour and a half later, Pranesh Tanti also passed away while undergoing treatment. The three-month-old infant was severely injured. Both children are currently receiving treatment in the hospital.
The infant's condition is stated to be critical and undergoing treatment at the ICU.
Upon hearing the news, local MLA Ratan Chakraborty rushed to GBP Hospital on Wednesday morning. He inquired about the injured children and expressed deep sorrow over the incident.
The alleged failure of the fire service personnel to attend a distress call sparked anger among the relatives.
