Nursing Officer Prajita Chakma Saves Critical Patient with Her Blood Donation in Tripura

In a noticeable display of compassion and dedication, 32-year-old nursing officer Prajita Chakma went beyond the call of duty to save a critically ill patient by voluntarily donating blood at Gomati District Hospital in Tripura on Wednesday.

The patient, Anjali Chowdhury, had been referred from Baikhora Primary Hospital in a dire condition, suffering from severe bleeding that had caused her hemoglobin levels to plummet to a dangerously low 2 g/dL.

Accompanied by her husband, Anjali was admitted to the hospital around 2 pm, coinciding with the start of Prajita’s shift.

After assessing the patient’s condition, the attending doctor recommended an urgent blood transfusion. Prajita, assigned to care for the patient, immediately informed Anjali's husband about the need to arrange blood for the procedure.

However, the man expressed his inability to secure the necessary blood.

Faced with the emergency, Prajita made a swift and life-saving decision. "Time was running out, and the patient desperately needed blood. For the first time in my life, I decided to donate my own blood," she shared.

Her O-positive blood was a match, and the transfusion was quickly administered. Reflecting on her decision, Prajita said, "I was deeply moved by her critical condition and knew I had to act."

Following the transfusion, Anjali’s hemoglobin levels improved to 5 g/dL, a significant step towards stabilization. "The patient is still in serious condition and is under observation in the hospital's maternity ward," Prajita told Enewstime.in.

Originally from Manu Bankul in South Tripura District, Prajita expressed her satisfaction in being able to assist during such a critical moment. "This was my first time donating blood, but I’ve often helped patients’ relatives arrange blood in the past. Many patients come from rural areas, making it difficult for their families to secure blood. I’m glad I could help those patients," she said.

Sources close to the Hospital said, Prajita’s selfless act underscores the extraordinary commitment of healthcare workers who go beyond their professional responsibilities to save lives. Her actions serve as an inspiring example of humanity and dedication in the medical field.
